Breast Reduction

About Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction is performed on over 100,000 women every single year. If patients suffer from having overly developed breasts that cause shoulder or neck pain, skin irritation, or posture problems, then they may be a terrific candidate for a breast reduction. During a breast reduction, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. G. Robert Meger, not only reduces the size of the breasts by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin, but he also shapes and sculpts the breasts to the goals and desires of the patient. If women are interested in receiving a breast reduction surgery, they can schedule a consult at our Phoenix, AZ office with Dr. Meger to determine the best procedure process for them.

Ideal Candidates

When a patient’s neck and back hurt, it reduces their quality of life. When they are in pain, movements are limited, posture is slumped, and they generally do not feel well. Women with large breasts experience this on a daily basis. Some women, through no fault of their own, cannot correct this issue with diet and exercise alone. If patients experience the following symptoms from large, heavy breasts, then they may be an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery:

  • Irritation and rashes on the skin underneath the bra
  • Diet and exercise unsuccessfully decreasing the size of the breasts
  • Disproportionate breasts to the body frame
  • Weight of the breasts causes pain in the neck, shoulders, and back
  • Bra strap grooves in the shoulders
  • Limitations on activity because of the size of the breasts
  • Poor posture

What to Expect

Women should expect their breast reduction to take 3 – 4 hours, and it is performed in an outpatient surgery center. After a light anesthetic is administered, Dr. Meger will make one or more incisions in the breast. Sometimes, three incisions are made: one around the areola, another from the areola to the breast crease (making a keyhole shape), and a third incision horizontally along the breast crease (the fold of skin at the bottom of the breast). Once the incisions are made, any excess fat, skin, and tissue are removed. In some cases, the fat can be removed by liposuction. If the breast is primarily composed of fatty tissue, then liposuction may be used instead of the breast reduction procedure. In many cases, the nipples stay attached to the nerves in order to maintain feeling. But if the breasts are sizable, the areolas and nipples may have to be repositioned. The incisions are then closed by the use of sutures, surgical tape, or adhesive.

Anticipated Results

Breast reduction surgery can dramatically change the lives of our patients, resulting in smaller breasts that make everyday activities easier. In the few months and weeks following the procedure, it is advised for patients to continue wearing comfortable bras and limit strenuous activity. Once exercise can be worked back into day-to-day life, it is important to maintain a healthy weight. Breast reduction surgery is a long-lasting cosmetic surgery; however, the results can be negatively impacted by weight gain and/or pregnancy.
