About Eyelid Surgery

An eyelid lift procedure, also referred to as a blepharoplasty, is performed to offset the appearance of fine lines, undereye bags, and wrinkles. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. G. Robert Meger, can perform this procedure in order to correct imperfections for both the upper and lower eyelids. Puffiness and folds, which can cause visual difficulties, can be eliminated by this surgery, while droopiness can be removed when the lower eyelids are corrected. In general, our Phoenix, AZ patients who have received an eyelid lift have visibly more alert eyes and an overall younger appearance. Patients who are interested in learning more about the benefits of the surgery can schedule a consultation at G. Robert Meger, M.D. P.C. to discuss the details with our plastic surgeon.

Best Candidates

The best candidates for eyelid surgery:

  • Have eyelid issues that cause them to look older
  • Have vision problems caused by droopy eyelids
  • Have droopy, downturned eyelids as a result of aging or genetics
  • Have bags under the eyes
  • Desire a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
  • Desire a natural look

What to Expect

Phoenix and Scottsdale patients who undergo a blepharoplasty are given a general anesthetic before the procedure begins. Our surgeon then makes the incisions. For upper eyelids, he makes incisions in the creases of the eyelid. The sagging skin is then excised and the tissue is tightened. During lower eyelid surgery, the doctor makes an incision beneath the lower lash line before removing the excess skin. The incisions are closed with either absorbable or removal sutures, surgical tape, or a skin adhesive. If removable sutures are used, they are generally taken out after about five days.

Anticipated Results

After surgery, patients can expect the eyelids to be bruised and swollen, which can be alleviated with ice packs, medicated eye ointments or eye drops, and elevating the head. These symptoms should last a few days. Eyelid recovery is usually easy for most patients and normal activities can be resumed within a week. Patients should expect natural-looking, younger, more refreshed eyelids after their surgery. In addition, scars should have little to no visibility due to their placement.
