A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a type of cosmetic surgery that reshapes abdominal muscles and removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, resulting in a flatter, leaner appearance. It can sometimes be used as part of a patient’s weight loss plan, along with diet and exercise. However, this procedure isn’t designed just to target extra pudge. Because the results are permanent, it’s more effective at correcting irreversible changes. Tummy tucks are very useful for addressing loose skin from extreme weight loss or pregnancy. If you’re interested in a tummy tuck surgery, here is what you should expect from the procedure.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Before surgery, the patient will be placed under general anesthesia. Once the patient is “under,” the surgeon will make a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen area between the hips. A second incision will be made around the belly button.

After the incisions have been made, the skin will be separated from the abdominal muscles. If the abdominal muscles are separated, the surgeon will pull them closer and stitch them together, producing a corset-like effect on the patient’s waist. If the patient has excess fat in the abdomen, the procedure may be performed alongside a liposuction.

Once the excess fat and muscle tone are addressed, the surgeon will remove excess skin, reposition the belly button, and close the incision. The end result should be a flatter, leaner, and younger-looking tummy.

Recovery

During surgery, tubes will be placed under the skin to help drain out fluids during the recovery period. These tubes will remain for the first few days after surgery. The patient is also required to wear a compression garment or binder to support their abdomen while their muscles recover.

The recovery time from a typical tummy tuck procedure can last from 6-8 weeks. During this period, patients must refrain from strenuous exercise, smoking, and drinking. After one to two weeks, patients may be able to return to work with their doctor’s permission.
