For a long time, liposuction was the most well-known procedure for removing and reducing fat. However, this surgical procedure comes with certain risks and side effects, making it not a viable option for many prospective patients. Thankfully, the rapid technological advances of today have allowed for the development of new, nonsurgical procedures- the most popular of which is called CoolSculpting.
This innovative procedure utilizes icy cold temperatures to remove stubborn fat cells from the body. Like liposuction, CoolSculpting directly targets problem areas, such as the lower abdomen and inner thighs. CoolSculpting, though, is completely noninvasive and does not require incisions or injections. Rather, fat cells are eliminated through a process called cryolipolysis, which gently freezes them. This process is not meant to work as a weight loss procedure or solution; it is ideal for those who are struggling to lose the last little bit of fat.
The treatment process involves the clinician using an external application on the skin above the desired treatment area. These cold temperatures go to work immediately on fat cells while leaving other necessary bodily cells alone. While results may not be noticeable instantly, the body begins to naturally eliminate all of the dead fat cells from the first treatment session. Full results will take longer, sometimes not being complete until six months post-treatment.
CoolSculpting has a high success rate, becoming more and more effective after each subsequent session. In fact, targeted areas usually experience an average of 20 percent fat loss. While a single procedure takes only an hour, results vary on an individual basis and do improve with multiple sessions. Once the treatment is complete, patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately, as there is no down-time or recovery time needed.
While this is certainly a safe and well-founded procedure, like all cosmetic treatments, there is a risk for experiencing certain side effects. The most common side effects include mild swelling or bruising, numbness, tingling, muscle cramps, tugging sensations, and/or itchiness.
Most people report feeling very satisfied with their results. However, it is possible to gain weight back after undergoing the procedure and, as such, a healthy diet and exercise routine is necessary for maintaining results.
