About Breast Implant Removal
While breast augmentation surgery is very popular and thousands of women receive implants each year to enhance the size and shape of their breasts, some women choose to have them removed later on. Phoenix, AZ plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Meger consults with women who wish to have their implants removed, as well as the options to restore the breast to look and feel normal once they are taken out. Breast implant removal surgery can address a variety of concerns, such as implant malfunction, scar tissue (capsular contracture), a dissatisfaction with breast size, or in some cases, women just prefer a natural breast. Depending on how large the implant was, a breast lift may be necessary to remove stretched skin and to create a healthy, normal appearance.
Is a Lift Needed?
In some cases, a breast lift of some nature will be incorporated during the implant removal surgery. This is due to the breasts becoming acclimated to the larger breast size, so the skin most likely had stretched over time. Once the implant is removed, there may be skin wrinkling, loose skin, and sagging. Dr. Meger will do a moderate lift to gently trim away excess skin and create a tighter look. If there is not enough volume to create a natural appearance, a fat transfer is also an option. This is performed using liposuction where fat is removed from one area of the body, such as the thighs, buttock, or abdomen, and introduced into the breasts. It is an autologous, natural approach to create a conservative shape and to help improve sag.

What to Expect
During breast implant removal surgery, the breast implant will be taken out and some scar tissue may form within the breast pocket. Scar tissue (also known as capsular contracture) is common with implants. In 90% of the cases, scar tissue is quite soft and removal is not required. Depending on what was discussed during the consultation, Dr. Meger will perform a breast lift, a fat transfer, or both. Some women may have enough native breast tissue remaining so when the implant is removed, there is enough volume to create an appealing look. There are many options to consider depending on patient goals, the current state of the breasts, etc. Recovery for a breast implant removal is generally a couple of weeks. Depending on how much reconstruction is needed (if any) once the implant is removed, recovery could be longer.
Anticipated Results
Breast implant removal patients will be educated on how to properly care for the surgical incision points and the best skincare treatments to reduce scarring. There will also be significant bruising and swelling for the first couple of weeks. Patients should limit strenuous exercise but still get up and move around to promote healing and blood circulation. Most patients recover in 4 – 6 weeks and are extremely happy with their natural results.
