About Breast Lift Surgery
A breast lift, also referred to as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at lifting breasts that are lacking firmness. There are a variety of factors that may cause the breasts to sag such as weight loss, breastfeeding, or pregnancy. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. G. Robert Meger, is able to reposition the sagging breast tissue and nipples back to a perkier, more elevated placement. The excess tissue and skin will be redraped and tightened in order to present an overall firmer appearance. Patients in need of a breast lift surgery should call G. Robert Meger, M.D. P.C. in Phoenix, AZ to schedule a consult and start their cosmetic journey.
Best Candidates
During the initial consultation and after a thorough exam, we will help determine if a breast lift is the right procedure. Ideal candidates for this operation are women who:
- Have realistic ideas about what breast lift surgery can do
- Have breasts that sag or need a better shape
- Have breasts that hang, are stretched out, or are asymmetrical
- Have nipples that point downward or rest underneath the breasts
- Have lost skin elasticity with weight loss, pregnancy, or age

What to Expect
Breast lifts are usually performed in an outpatient surgery center. Dr. Meger uses all of the precise details discussed during the consultation as a guide to help ensure patients get the results that they want. After a light anesthesia is administered, Dr. Meger makes as many as three incisions. One incision is placed around the areola (the colored circle around the nipple). Every breast lift utilizes at least this incision. Another incision may be required and is made vertically from the areola to the fold of the breast, also called the breast crease. A third horizontal incision also may be required and is made below the breast, which follows its natural curve. After the incisions are made, Dr. Meger removes any excess skin to lift and reposition the areola and nipple. If patients are getting a breast augmentation, Dr. Meger will also insert and position your implants at this time. Dr. Meger sometimes uses modified techniques that require only one incision. The exact method used for performing the procedure is dependent on the patient’s breast size, the size of the areolas, and the amount of sagging.
Anticipated Results
With breast lift surgery, the patient will see results in the shape of her breasts right after surgery, but the final result will be visible after the swelling from surgery subsides. The recovery will vary since many patients will have a breast lift in combination with another plastic surgery procedure, such as a breast augmentation, breast reduction, or tummy tuck. Patients will be urged to do light activities, such as slowly moving around the room, or spend a few minutes standing within the first 48 hours to stimulate blood circulation. There should be no heavy lifting or strenuous activity involving the chest whatsoever. Patients can restart their normal activities within 2 – 3 weeks, but exercise should not be attempted for 6 – 8 weeks. There is a myth that women who have breast lift surgery never have to wear a bra again. This is not true as patients will want to wear a bra to keep the breasts in the right position. The breast skin will continue to age regardless of this surgical intervention, but it should not be as severe as it was before breast lift surgery.
